How Many Dudes Resource Management Guide
The official developer guide says it best: "How Many Dudes might seem like it's a game about Dudes beating stuff up, but secretly, it's about compound interest." This guide breaks the run economy into four systems: gold, the Relic pool, consumables, and Dude Juice — all sourced from the official guide.
1. Gold & the Business Dude (Compound Interest)
Three times per run, the Business Dude offers to invest your cash — and returns double each time. The official guide's math: give him $1,000 → he returns $2,000 → re-invest → $4,000 → final round → $8,000. The lesson:
- Every dollar spent early is a dollar that can't triple. The guide: "you need to be strategic and make the early game a little harder in order to make the late game easier."
- Skimping too hard loses fights — the guide calls it "a delicate balance." Our Early Game build shows a concrete way to balance it.
- Late-game wealth is absurd: the devs added a setting to "adaptively shrink down the relic icons" because you can end up with so many Relics they cover the battlefield.
- Finance Dude generates $3 per battle — the easiest passive income in the game, and the official site's "life insurance policy" synergy makes him even better.
2. The Relic Pool: Families & Flyers
The single most misunderstood system. Per the official guide:
- Every Dude Type has 7 personal Relics, and every Family has a collection of 8 Family Relics.
- When you post a Flyer for a Dude Type, his 7 Relics + his Family's 8 Relics are added to the pool of Relics you can see.
- Each Relic enters the pool only once.
Example from the official guide: an all-Undead team = 8 Undead Family Relics + 35 Dude Relics in the pool. Dude-specific Relics appear often. A five-Family team = 40 Family Relics + 35 Dude Relics — your key Dude Relics become much rarer. Fewer Families = smaller pool = more control.
Pre-Posted Flyers (Daily Dude, Rematch & Ensemble)
Modes like the Daily Dude and Rematch Mode pre-post all five Flyers before the run — the entire Relic pool is available immediately. That's good for variety but bad for targeted builds. The guide's Ensemble Mode trick: pre-post just the Flyer whose Relic you must have (e.g., Vampire's Blood Bag), keep the pool tiny, and "there's a much better chance I get the Blood Bag."
3. Dude Juice Discipline
The guide's rule is simple: hold the Juice. Dudes recover on their own after a few rounds, and buying Dude Juice every time someone falls unconscious "burns cash unnecessarily." Let the team grind out wins with a couple of Dudes down; bank the money for Relics and investments. The one exception: when losing a fight genuinely loses your streak, the Juice pays for itself.
4. Consumables (Official Guide Breakdown)
| Consumable | Official Use | Relic Synergy (official) |
|---|
| Meteors | Stun strong enemies and separate them from your vulnerable Dudes | Padded Helmet — Meteors also grant Temporary Health |
| Bottled Lightning | Gamble: sometimes takes out 1–2 big enemies, or many weak ones (and stuns) | — |
| Strange Spores | Keep weak Dudes healthy by spreading HP around | Fairy Ring — boosts Healing during its duration |
| Health Potions | Heal; overheal grants Temporary Health (pre-emptive one-shot protection) | Pumpkin Latte — brief Toughness boost on use |
| Burner Phones | Grant Temporary Health; relocate Dudes across the field to safety | — |
Takeaway from the guide: "don't sleep on Consumables. Every Consumable has the ability to save your Dudes' lives in a pinch." In boss fights, a pre-emptive Health Potion (overheal → Temporary Health) is literally a one-shot shield.
5. The Economy of Survivability
Knockouts cascade — the guide: "Once you lose some Dudes, you'll start the next round at a disadvantage, and you'll have a higher chance of losing even more Dudes." Prevention is cheaper than revival:
- Early-mid run: prioritize Toughness, Max HP, Temporary Health Relics so nobody gets one-shot by a Moose or Shotgun Turtle.
- Stack Cheat Death (Circuit Breaker, Bat Wings, Time Dude's Rewind) to make risky fights safe.
- Watch out: Evasion/Block mitigate lots of small hits but fail exactly once on a big one — the guide's warning about all-Evasion teams.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I buy every Relic I see?
Late game, yes — once your Business Dude compounding is running, the guide's vision is buying "nearly every Relic you see." Early game, no: every purchase is an un-invested dollar. The exact balance depends on how confident you are in your team.
How do I get a specific Relic reliably?
Control the pool: stick to one or two Families (fewer Family Relics in the pool) and, in Ensemble Mode, pre-post only the Flyer whose Relic you need. The official guide's Blood Bag example is the canonical play.
Is Finance Dude worth a team slot?
Usually yes in the early/mid game — $3 per battle compounds exactly like the Business Dude's interest. Swap him out in the endgame when a fight-winning Dude matters more than money.
